Power of Attorney (LPA)

Securing Your Peace of Mind

Life is full of unexpected twists, but planning ahead can make all the difference. A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) ensures that if you’re ever unable to make decisions for yourself, the people you trust most will step in to handle your finances, healthcare, and personal matters. At The Straits Geriatric Centre, we’re here to guide you through every step, helping you feel confident and secure in your choices.

Understanding Power of Attorney (LPA)

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is like leaving a trusted friend with a spare key—not just to your home, but to your important decisions. This legal document allows you (the donor) to appoint people you trust (donees) to act on your behalf if you lose mental capacity. It’s a way to make sure your wishes are respected and that your well-being, property, and finances are in the best hands possible.

How Power of Attorney (LPA) Works

Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) might seem overwhelming at first, but with the right support, it’s a simple and reassuring process.

  1. Choose Your Donees Select trusted individuals—family members or close friends—who will act in your best interest.

  2. Decide the Powers Granted Clearly define what your donees can handle, from personal welfare to financial decisions.

  3. Complete the LPA Form Fill out the form (Form 1 for standard powers or Form 2 for tailored powers). A lawyer may assist with Form 2 if needed.

  4. Certify the LPA Have the form certified by a lawyer, doctor, or psychiatrist, who ensures you fully understand the process and are acting freely.

  5. Submit for Registration Register the LPA with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG). A 3-week waiting period allows for any objections.

  6. Once Registered The LPA becomes legally binding, ready to be activated if you ever lose the ability to make decisions.

  7. Donees Step In When Needed Your donees will act according to your instructions, ensuring your preferences are upheld with care and respect.
